Transnational religious and faith-based movements play crucial roles in peacebuilding with their strong faith-based motivation, long term commitment, religious, spiritual and moral authority and ability to facilitate constructive social relations between different groups of population. It is not religion itself that is influential, but rather the ways in which it has been interpreted and practiced that is influential in religion's orientation toward radicalism, violence, conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Thus, it is necessary to elaborate upon what Islam and Muslims have to say about peacebuilding. The exploration of the contributions to this volume is made with regards to the title in hand by the thought and practice of the global movement associated with the Turkish Muslim scholar Fethullah Gnlen.Gnlen is described in this volume as "border transgressor" between East and West. Gnlen's discourse is analyzed and contextualized along with a detailed analysis of intercultural dialogue in his theology and thought. Contributors also observe Gnlen's discourse in action and its impact in different actual settings. The importance and distinctiveness of teaching of Gnlen and the practice of the movement is that it is rooted in a confident Turkish Islamic heritage while being fully engaged with modernity. It offers the possibility of a contextualized renewal for Muslims in the modern world while being fully rooted in the teachings of the Qur'an and the practice of the Prophet. It advocates the freedom of religion while positively contributing to the wider society based on a commitment to service of others.Fethullah Gnlen has inspired many people in Turkey to establish educational institutions that combine modern sciences with ethics and spirituality. He is perhaps the most significant Muslim theologian and activist in contemporary Turkey. His efforts have resulted in the emergence of a civil society movement, which academics name after him. The actual size of Gnlen's millions of followers and sympathizers is not exactly known. But it is agreed that it is the largest civil movement in the country.Gnlen holds an inclusive, universalist and transcending Islamic conception. He does not claim ownership to a monopoly of truth, and the Movement is not an ideological movement, thus it is inclusive as opposed to exdusivist Islamist ideologies. The Gnlen Movement "aims to revitalize faith in secular regimes and not against them." In Gnlen's view, the faithful can reside comfortably in secular environments. He makes reference to an Anglo-Saxon understanding of passive secularism and argues that within the boundaries of this type of secularism, Islam and secularity of the state could be compatible.Gnlen's theology of peace is based on the integrity of the individual regardless of ethnic or religious background and approach to peacebuilding, therefore, is one of "bottom-up" social change. Scholars of peacebuilding consider forgiveness essential for peacebuilding, and in Gnlen's theology of peacebuilding, there is no place for revenge.Chapters in this edited volume substantiate that both Muslim teachings and Gnlen discourse and practice support acceptance of diversity, pluralism, nonviolence, alliance of civilizations and peacebuilding.John L. Esposito is University Professor of Religion and International Affairs at Georgetown University and Founding Director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin-Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.Ihsan Yilmaz is a professor of political science at Fatih University, Istanbul. His research areas include the Turkish diaspora, Turkish politics, Islamic movements, Muslim legal pluralism and Fethullah Gnlen's faith-based movement.
